map of our area

And this is the only map i got to show where my area is located. hehe! Kroya 1 is my home for 6 weeks!

village life week 2

a dead body was found near the railway tracks around 7am. the police called the puskesmas, the puskesmas called me, and poof, i went there to do an autopsy. this is the first time i do an autopsy by myself with policemen surrounding me. talk about experience of a lifetime!! d body was still very fresh, less than 12 hours. out of respect to the dead body, i took pics of the area where the body was found, and not the body itself.

And for the first time in my life, i tried jamu. they put the jamu powder into a cup of hot milk and it taste like crap, then they gave me a cup of honey to get the taste out of my mouth. interesting experience, but i wouldnt wanna retry it. btw, got jamu to boost libido, womanly powers and to get rid of bodyaches. (all bull-crap, dun believe lah)

I am on a 4 hours train ride from kroya to Jogjakarta. I am bored so I decide to spend the time telling you about today. I was at a village 'mother and infant immunization gathering' today. During the gathering, a mother asked me about her 3 year old daughter. Holding her drooling child, she asked me why her daughter can't walk yet.

One look at the little girl, I knew she's mentally retarded. But I didn't have the guts nor words to tell the mother that, so I examined her, snubbed out the mom's worry about the daughter's current tuberculosis infection, educated the mom to continue with the meds and she forgot to reask me why her daughter still can't walk.

Yes, i am sure the child is mentally retarded. I took her history and examined her. Only problem is, I do not want to tell the mother the news. How do you tell a family who earns barely RM100 a month and stays in a village far from any institute that provides help to the mentally challenged, that their beloved daughter is mentally retarded and will most likely require extra care throughout her whole life?

Once a Scout, Always a Scout!

I attended a cuboree once, back in 2003 with my patrol-Tun Fatimah. It was held in Kuching and we were the facilitators-it was part of the community service we had to do to get five high or king scout-I forgot which.

Yesterday, 10 february 2011, I was sent together with a few nurses and an ambulance to a village in indonesia for an event called 'siaga'. Imagine my surprise to see thousands of cub scouts gathering in a big field in the middle of paddy fields.

The first thought that popped into my mind were 'omg, siaga means cuboree!! I am attending an Indonesian cuboree!!!' After the opening ceremony, the cubs had to move from checkpoint to checkpoint. I was stationed near the dancing and singing checkpoint, so I had the amazing chance to hear the cubs sing Indonesian songs and dance with their costumes. At one point, a group of cub scouts performed 'hongke hongke, hongke rio' and I was so surprised and excited I leaped out of my chair and yelled to my teammates 'i know that song! Omg!'

To think that 6 years ago a fellow scout, sheng chiong, taught me that song when we camped at a beach - and years later, I am in Indonesia, listening to cub scouts sing the very same song!

This experience reminded me that you will never know where you'll go in life. That tomboy I know was simply learning a song and having fun with her friends in a camp. Little would she know that 6 years later she would be in indonesia, listening to cub scouts from another nationality perform the very same song.

So to all my fellow scouts, cherish the memories. And don't worry, they may fade but they will never disappear. Once a scout, always a scout!

Guess what? These kids in colorful nilon pom poms are singing hongke hongke!

why having a daughter is better than having a son

this is based on my life. so u are free to think differently but dun bother voicing it to me.

Chinese New Year is the time for hustle and bustle, cleaning, cooking, baking, decorating. Simple words that actually means a LOT of work. my mom will be the one who wakes up at 4 or 5am to clean and cook and bake, and she sleeps around midnight. talk about power woman.

if you are a son, please, take note - DONT JUST SIT THERE. your house is not a hotel. Help out. Helping may sound foreign to you but if you make an effort you can definitely do it. After all, didnt you say you're the superior species? That housework is easy and needs no brains? Then surely you can lift a finger and mop or vacuum the house.

I cannot take it that I have to help - wake up at 7am, peel prawn scales, eat breakfast, clean dog poop and pee, give dog shower, dust the furniture, bake cookies, mop the floor, hang, keep and fold laundry, iron the laundry - all in one day, whereas a SON can just wake up at noon, go out eat brunch and God knows what, come back at 5pm, wash the car and is considered a good son simply because he actually did something. so a DAUGHTER has to do everything, but a SON needs to do only ONE thing and that's equavalent to everything.

so sons, you are lucky you are born a male. it becomes not an excuse, but a REASON for you to be lazy and enjoy life. Go play fireworks from 6pm till 2am, go ahead, the daughter will be the one cleaning the house, arranging the cookies, preparing dinner, throwing rubbish, cleaning up after dinner, etc.

so you know what? stupid SONS, go ahead and continue being lazy. just dont bother asking me why i'm in such a bad mood.

and when you finish eating ur meal, do the very least - wash ur own plates. and when you leave the house to go back to ur studies or work in another town, clean ur room before u leave. and when u see clothes hanging outside and its turning dark, take the clothes in instead of telling ur sister or mother 'eh, the clothes are still outside, moon tanning'. we f***ing know its moon tanning, we just have no time to go and take them in.

and at the end of this post, i still love my brothers to bits. no matter how pissed i am, they are still my brothers and i will always love them. forever. =)
